In the screenshot you sent you are using your variable and it's hard to tell what could be wrong.
If you want to display the current date, you can use system variables.
Please see the attached image.

We have a single backslash in the connection string and the problem is not reproduced on our side.
We open the report in both designer and viewer and the data is displayed.

We were unable to reproduce the problem on the latest release build with the data type for columns and parameters.
As for the size of the parameters you get, you have to configure it yourself.
