Variable List from DataSource

Hello,
I am trying to use a variable that has a list of items to use for 'Contains'. I can make it work using Items as the source, however I have many items I would need to add.
When I try and use a DataSource column the report loads but overlooks any variables in place and does not even show the input options on the left side as if they never existed. Any help in this matter? I am using Reports.Server v2016.3.10.
