Empty collections in JSON datasource

When I have an empty collection in my JSON data source, the report engine just ignores it and thus any sections in the report based on it fail leaving an empty report.
For example, if I have a master/child report showing a User with a list favourite page details below. If the user I export to the report doesn't have any favourites the favourites collection in JSON is empty. Rather than just showing the master details and an empty child (or not showing the child) because there are no matching elements, the report fails and shows no details. Is there a way I should be setting up relationships between master data and child datasets in the datasource to handle potentially empty child datasets, or is this a just a bug in the report engine?
