Modifying Variables

Hello,
I have a question about modifying variables in the output function:
I want to generate a numbering within a hierarchical data band for example:
1. element 1 level 1
1.1. element 1 level 2
1.1.1. element 1 level 3
1.2. element 2 level 2
2. element 2 level 1

I tried to use the rendering event in the hierarchical databand, but this seems to be triggerd, after the text as been build.
Can you give me a hint?

Can you please describe your task in more details?
Also please try to use the Hierarchical databand component.
