Strange designer behaviour in Internet Explorer

Problems with Report Designer.

We have a really strange problem in that during development the designer works fine but once it has been precompiled and deployed onto a live site it seems to stop working for IE8.
Chrome works fine and so does Firefox but IE seems to load up the designer incorrectly. Instead of loading the report it shows a blank page and it reports the wrong version (2008.2).
No exceptions are being thrown and if we use Fiddler2 we can see the correct config files and scripts are being loaded.

I can PM you the account details of the live site as I don't really want the login details to be public, I'm pulling my hair out.
